How does 50 µm compare to standard kitchen foil?

Kitchen foil is usually 10–15 microns. At 50 microns, Cocourth is 3–5 times thicker — that's why it doesn't sag under coal weight the way kitchen foil does.

Is 50 µm overkill for normal sessions?

For light sessions with one or two coals, yes — a 40 µm foil is fine. Pick Cocourth specifically if you run heavy three or four coal setups, or if you've had sagging problems with thinner foil.
